  * [Japan] Saury catches increase

  Japan | Fish | Production | 2001.12.17

At the end of November, the saury season closed with 266,342 tonnes caught - an impressive increase of 28 per cent over last year's total.

However, high catches and small-sized items caught towards the end of the season have contributed to a relatively low price level, while the extraordinary large specimens caught at the season's opening were priced somewhat higher.

Average unit price per kg was JPY 104.80, 34 per cent cheaper than last season. This season's total catch value was JPY 27,918,800,000, a 15 per cent drop from last year.

Catches this season were fairly good from the beginning, to the extent they were expected to exceed the Total Allowable Catch (TAC). Due to this, the Saury Fisheries Association tried to control the amounts caught by forcing vessels to remain at port for 24 hours after making a landing.

Classified by prefectures, catch in Hokkaido was 115,466 tonnes, slightly more than last year (+ one per cent). The total catch from Honshu was 150,876 tonnes (+61 per cent). Aomari caught 1,120 tonnes (+14 per cent), Iwate 51,047 tonnes (+35 per cent), Miyagi 80,190 tonnes (+55 per cent), Fukushima 5,424 tonnes (+156 per cent), Ibaraki 324 tonnes (+16 per cent) and Chiba Prefecture recorded 12,771 tonnes, showing an astounding 555 per cent increase over last year's total.
