The total volume of Atlanto Scandian herring handled by the Norwegian
Fishermen's Sales Organisation for Pelagic Fish (Norges Sildesalgslag)
dropped from 826,000 tonnes last year to 529,000 tonnes this year. The
price situation has more than compensated for the reduced quotas, the
first hand value of Atlanto Scandian herring fisheries have increased from
NOK 1.4 billion in 2000 to NOK 2 billion this year.
More money for less work is an ideal situation for Norwegian pelagic
fishermen. The average price of Atlanto Scandian herring paid to fishermen
increased from NOK 1.55 per kilo last year, to NOK 3.67 this year. Prices
have risen mainly because of higher prices on the market, but another
factor is that less herring has ended up in fishmeal and fish oil plants
this year, which pay less, compared to 2000, reports Fiskeribladet. A total
of 140,000 tonnes went to fishmeal and fish oil plants last year, compared
to only 20,600 so far this year.
The purse seine fleet has a 246,000-tonne quota this year and has less
than 3,000 tonnes left to catch. The total value of this year's Atlanto
Scandian herring fisheries will end up at more than NOK 900 million. Last
year's results were NOK 786 million for 400,000 tonnes.
The coastal pelagic fleet has made NOK 683 million from its 197,000 tonnes
catch, up from NOK 372 million last year. Last year's catch was 241,000
tonnes. The coastal fleet increased its herring earnings by NOK 311 million
this year.
The trawler quota was 71,000 tonnes in 2000 and the value reached NOK 105
million. This year the trawler fleet will make around NOK 150 million on
46,000 tonnes of herring. Foreign landings of Atlanto Scandian herring
reached 81,500 tonnes this year, down from 113,000 tonnes in 2000. The
value increased from NOK 133 million to NOK 259 million.
