Busan Customs Quality Control Office announced Wednesday that it had found
nails and lead netting sinkers contaminating imported frozen fish from
China and had returned all of the shipment to its port of origin.
According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the office
found a 3cm lead netting sinker weighing 15g and nails in frozen fish
imported through Busan on December 13 and ordered all 21 tons returned to
China.
The incident marks the second time nails have been found in frozen croaker
since August 2001, when the office found them along with 10 lead sinkers
in three croakers imported from China.
An official noted that this is the tenth such incident of fisheries import
contamination since the July 1st signing of an agreement on Safety Controls
for Exports and Imports of Marine Products. The government is planning to
include the issue at a joint economic committee meeting between Seoul and
Beijing, to start December 28 in China.
