The ongoing Korea-Russia talks on the Russian quota for pollack fishing by
Korea have apparently hit a snag as the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and
Fisheries (MMAF) said Friday that the two parties agreed to extend the
negotiations for one more day to Saturday.
Korea and Russia held a two-day meeting in Moscow, starting from Thursday,
to decide on Russia's state quota for pollack fishing by Korea's deep-sea
fishers inside Russia's exclusive economic zone.
Officials from the two governments had held meetings in Seoul on Nov. 22
through to 27 for the same agenda but they failed to reach any agreement.
Moscow has allowed Korea a total of 35,000 tons of pollack fishing this
year but the quota is expected to be halved as Russia plans to ban pollack
fishing in the Sea of Okhotsk next year. Russia's pollack quota for Korea
amounted to 10,000 tons from the Sea of Okhotsk and 25,000 tons from Bering
Sea.
