Busan Customs Quality Control Office announced Wednesday that it had again
found lead in imported fish from China, specifically a 2.3cm sinker
weighing 8.5g in a frozen croaker. Customs officials said they ordered the
entire five-ton shipment to be returned to its port of origin.
The incident marks the seventh such case of imported fish from China
containing metals such as lead since the July 1 signing of the "Agreement
on Safety Controls for Exports and Imports of Marine Products," by Beijing
and Seoul. According to the agreement, any marine products processing plant
found to be the source of contamination is supposed to have its export
license suspended for a fixed period of time.
Lee Gyu-heon, the head of the Imports Division of the BCQCO said the
croaker at issue this time was shipped from Shendong, China on November 22,
adding it was the second such fish to be contaminated with lead since
mid-November.
