Korea and Russia failed to reach an agreement on the 2002 pollack fishing
quota in their final session of fishing talks at the office of the Ministry
of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Tuesday, but agreed to continue dialogue
in a second round of meetings in Moscow next month.
Moscow is banning pollack fishing in the Sea of Okhotsk next year to boost
fish resources, adding that it cannot help but reduce South Korea's quota,
which was 35,000 tons this year's International Total Allowance Catch
(ITAC) for pollack in other waters such as the Bering Sea is down 60%.
Park Jae-yeong, an assistant secretary at MOMAF said that the government
would fill up the trimmed fishing quota by launching a joint business with
Russia, and aggressively participating in a bid to keep pollack TAC in
line with that of this year.
