Introduction
November 2001 offers possibly the only opportunity for suppliers to the fishing industry to meet the major owners and operators of much of South East Asia's fishing and
aquaculture industries in one place at one time.
The unique circumstance that brings the South East Asian fishing industry together is the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) - SEAFDEC (South East Asian
Fisheries Development Centre) Millennium Fisheries Conference and Exhibition,
being held in Bangkok from November 21 to 24, 2001. The Millennium Fisheries
Conference will be pivotal to the future of the commercial fishing industry in the region.
The ASEAN region is already one of the world's most important seafood producing areas
and while supplying large domestic markets ASEAN countries are now the biggest
exporters of seafood into the global market, and are becoming larger. Their growing
importance in the marketplace has led the industry to a point where it is now having to
embark on a massive modernization of its equipment to meet the demands of today's
global marketplace. The industry is now looking to upgrade its fishing fleets with new
boats, the latest technology, equipment and training that will help them achieve best
practice techniques in the catching, rearing, handling, storing, processing, and
transporting of seafood.
